2022 Goals

My main goal in 2022 is to start my own business outside of my full time job. But "starting a business" can entail many things so I'd like to outline more specifically what I plan to accomplish:

Develop a Consistent Writing Habit

So much of publishing content online stems from having a writing habit, so my main focus will be to write every day, regardless of how much or how little I can write. I have two little kids at home and try to help out as much as I can which makes it rather difficult to stick to a consistent schedule. This means I will need to write whenever and wherever I can find some time.

I plan to use this personal blog as an incubator to write about ideas that pertain to topics I'm interested in which then can be repurposed for other platforms. The topics I am interested in are:

  • Software engineering
  • Technology
  • Living intentionally
  • Relationships
  • Navigating Parenting / Starting a family
  • Productivity
  • I suppose anything that I come across in my life is fair game since this is a personal blog after all.

My objective goals for writing are:

  • 52 blog posts (weekly) from the above topics
  • and 12 additional posts to track my progress in 2022 and build in public, which happens to be my second goal.

Making for a total of 64 posts on this personal blog in 2022.

Build in Public

I'd like to build this business in public, by sharing much of the experience online. I think this will help me accomplish several things that I currently don't have going for me:

  1. Hold me accountable
  2. Document my progress
  3. Be helpful to others

Start a YouTube Channel

Besides writing, the more concrete project I want to take on is to start creating content on YouTube. I've been contemplating this for some time and the book "Show Your Work" by Austin Kleon pushed me to commit to this decision.

Another piece of advice I have heard for publishing content is to focus on content that interests me while leveraging my strengths and unique position that I am in. As far as topics are concerned, they will be similar to the contents of my blog. As far as my unique factors that I can leverage:

  • I'm currently a software engineer at Google and am uniquely positioned to talk about the software engineering industry, so this is likely where I will begin.
  • I also didn't study computer science in college. In fact, I studied music, and worked in customer service before moving into software engineering, which is more relatable to people who are just starting out in their coding journey but did not go to college for a computer science degree. How I went about doing this is likely to be valuable to someone else in a similar position.
  • I am passionate about mentoring people and get a lot of fulfillment by helping others.

On this front, I'll aim to post biweekly which is a target of 26 videos (biweekly) in 2022 to have something concrete to aim at.

Conclusion

I'll keep this goal list a nice and simple one this year. I plan to post my next update at the end of January.
