Hi Friends,

I'm getting back into writing more this year, and part of that will include writing more updates on this blog. I'm turning this more into a personal blog where I'll be posting about business, family, and life in general. (Feel free to unsubscribe if it's a nuisance.)

If you're interested more in the coding stuff, check out my coding career content here.

This is a bit delayed, but I quit my job on December 1st 2023 to pursue entrepreneurship.

I thought I knew what "pursuing entrepreneurship" meant to me, but it turns out that I don't.

I tried a bunch of different business ideas, some utterly failed, some actually surviving and being maintained... but I just didn't have much excitement around what I was working on.

After a lot of contemplation and going back and forth, I figured out what I want to pursue:

  • Build an audience around coding education.
  • Figure out monetization along the way.

Those are my overarching goals.

More specifically, that goal breaks down into these concrete goals:

  • Grow a newsletter
  • Grow on YouTube
  • Grow on LinkedIn (maybe? I haven't fully committed to this platform yet.)

But goals without breaking it down into daily and weekly actions is not very actionable... so this is the plan that I've come up with:

Growing on social media is a long term strategy, so I'm not expecting much growth right off the bat. But I do want to give it an honest shot so this will be what I stick to for the foreseeable future.

My immediate target is to get the newsletter to 500 subscribers. From there I will begin to explore monetization paths.

Justification

The strategy that I see is that building an audience is synonymous to building a business asset.

There's 4 reasons why I think building an audience is the right move.

1) I don't have clarity around what specific business problem I can solve and to build a business around, but I do have knowledge and experience that others would find valuable.

2) An audience is a business asset. Being able to drive attention to whatever you point it at is a business advantage. I'm seeing this recurring theme in all of the business podcasts, books, and content I'm consuming.

3) The audience will give me more clarity around what problem I can solve for them, or what general problems that are on the market that need to be solved.

4) Audience building is a valuable skill in and of itself. Even if the particular audience is not profitable, the act of audience building is worthwhile because the skill is useful beyond a certain niche. That takes the pressure off of me to find the "right" niche.

So that's it! Those are my 2024 goals.

I'll keep you posted.
